Patient Education Home | Irritable bladder
Irritable bladder is a feeling of pain or sensitivity in the bladder or urethra when you urinate. It is not a bladder infection; urine tests do not find bacteria in the urine. Irritable bladder can be caused by stress, local irritation, or a problem with the nerves that control the bladder.
You may be able to relieve symptoms of irritable bladder by avoiding sources of irritation, such as tight clothing, bubble baths, alcohol, and caffeine. If you cannot relieve symptoms, your doctor may recommend relaxation training or medication to relax bladder muscles.
