I was just reading an article this week about a study published last year that found that there is a significant increase in breast cancer risk in women who are “light” alcohol drinkers, meaning that they have one drink a day or less (3-6 drinks/week) (JAMA. 2011;306:1884-1890).

The DASH Eating Plan, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, is an example of such an eating plan. In studies, patients who were on the DASH-EP reduced their blood pressure within two weeks. Another eating plan -- DASH-Sodium -- calls for reducing sodium (salt) to 1,500 mg a day (about 2/3 teaspoon). Studies of patients on the DASH-Sodium plan significantly lowered their blood pressure.

Every woman has BRCA genes, however there is a group of women who suffer from BRCA gene mutation. This mutation can occur at birth or over time. Researchers don't know why this occurs, but it seems to be genetic in nature. Women who experience this mutation have a 1 in 3 chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime.
