Many of our patients experience difficulty walking long distances during pregnancy, particularly during the final trimester. Things that used to be fairly simple, like going to the grocery store, now take twice as long and twice the energy. In the hot summer months, such a trip can put a good deal of strain on your body, and subsequently on your pregnancy. Some stores have designated “Expectant Mother” parking, but what about the places that do not? That row of nearly empty disabled parking right next to the entrance looks inviting…

The state of Arizona Motor Vehicle Division provides temporary disability placards for those who have medical necessity. These placards are good for six months and allow the holder to park in any space marked for disabled persons. The placard can be renewed after six months if the necessity persists. An application or renewal application must be filled out by a physician or hospital administrator and be taken to the MVD to obtain the placard. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation website, a person can apply for this placard if he or she is “unable to walk 200 feet without stopping to rest.”

If you feel you fall into one of these categories, talk with your provider about obtaining a temporary disability placard. The application form can be downloaded at http://mvd.azdot.gov/mvd/formsandpub/mvd.asp?txtNumber=96-0104
