Get ready Maricopa, Dr. Sonia Matthews is joining Drs. Goodman & Partridge, OB/GYN! Dr. Matthews has been practicing in Tucson for the past few years and is making the move to Maricopa on May 11, 2010. Dr. Matthews is a graduate of Knox College in Galesburg, IL, where she majored in Biochemistry. She graduated with honors, participated in Sigma Xi: Scientific Research Society, and was the recipient of two scholarships. She went on to George Washington University School of Medicine in DC and earned her Doctor of Medicine. As part of the top 10% of the class, Dr. Matthews is a member of the Kane-King-Dodek Obstetrical Society. She shares that distinction with others of our Practice like Dr. Clifford Goodman! During her third year rotations, she knew she wanted to do obstetrics and gynecology. She said she picked it because it was something she was good at. She loves surgery; helping women and their families through some of their happiest moments during pregnancy and delivery is very rewarding. Dr. Matthews completed her OB/GYN residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Matthews was born in "Middle of Nowhere," Nebraska, but she grew up in the "big city" of Lakewood, Colorado. She is a sports enthusiast, but prefers to play rather than watch. The only team she really follows is Nebraska Women’s Basketball, win or lose. She played softball, soccer and basketball in high school and college, and would love to find a softball league to play in here. Her mom is also athletic and still plays softball, but her younger sister Erica chose classical ballet over sports. Despite the cultural differences between a sports enthusiast and a ballerina, Dr. Matthews and her sister are very close. Erica lives in Washington, DC, and will be graduating from college this year.

Five years of high school Spanish and caring for Spanish speaking patients in Chicago gave Dr. Matthews a great command of the Spanish language. She loves to visit Mexico, particularly a little-known beach between Cancun and Belize that has fantastic ruins and great reefs. The beaches are gorgeous there.

Dr. Matthews loves to camp… at a hotel. No bathroom = no Dr. Matthews. "Why would you want to try the reversal of evolution? I don’t understand…" She also enjoys good music and good concerts, like Brandi Carlisle, Fleetwood Mac and Indigo Girls. Dr. Matthews, we are excited to welcome you to Drs. Goodman & Partridge, OB/GYN!
